Cinderella follows the fortunes of Ella (Lily James), whose father remarries following the tragic death of her mother (Hayley Atwell). Keen to support her father, Ella welcomes her new stepmother, Lady Tremaine (Cate Blanchett), and her daughters, Drizella (Sophie McShera) and Anastasia (Holliday Grainger), into the family home. But when Ella’s father suddenly passes away, she finds herself at the mercy of a jealous and cruel new family. Relegated to nothing more than a servant girl and renamed Cinderella, Ella could easily begin to lose hope. Things change when Ella meets a dashing stranger (Richard Madden) in the woods, unaware that he is Prince Charming, and finally feels she has met a kindred soul. Invitations are sent out for all maidens to attend a ball at the palace, raising Ella’s hopes of once again encountering Prince Charming. Alas, her stepmother forbids her to attend and callously rips apart her dress. Luckily, help is at hand as a kindly beggar woman (Helena Bonham Carter) steps forward and, armed with a pumpkin and a few mice, changes Cinderella’s life forever.
