Detective Steve Burns (Al Pacino) is ordered to go undercover and hangout at the city’s gay clubs, in the hope of catching the killer. However, as Steve becomes immersed in the underground scene, he begins to identify with the subculture more than he expected. He begins to behave distantly around his girlfriend, Nancy (Karen Allen), and struggles to cope with his own colleagues who discount gay people because of their sexual orientation.
