They live a life of poverty as Selma works at a factory with her friend, Kathy (Catherine Deneuve). What no one in Selma’s life knows is that she has a hereditary disease that is gradually causing her to go blind. Gene stands to suffer the same fate if she can’t raise the money needed to get him an operation. When a desperate neighbour falsely accuses Selma of stealing his savings, the drama of her life escalates to a tragic finale.
