Unable to convince the ruling council of Krypton that their world will soon destroy itself, Jor-El (Marlon Brando) takes drastic measures to save his infant son and sends him to planet Earth. There, gaining superhuman powers under the earth’s yellow sun, he will become a champion of truth and justice. Raised by Jonathan (Glenn Ford) and Martha Kent (Phyllis Thaxter), Clark learns that his abilities must be used for good.

At the age of 18, soon after the death of his foster father, Clark travels to the Arctic, where a crystal in his possession builds the Fortress of Solitude. Inside, a vision of Jor-El explains Clark’s origins, educating him in his powers and responsibilities. After 12 years, with his powers fully developed, Clark (Christopher Reeve) leaves and becomes a reporter at the Daily Planet in Metropolis. He meets and develops a romantic attraction to co-worker Lois Lane (Margot Kidder), but she sees him as awkward and unsophisticated. Meanwhile, Lex Luthor (Gene Hackman), the world’s greatest criminal mind, is plotting the greatest real estate swindle of all time.
