He is rescued by Annie Wilkes (Kathy Bates), a former nurse, who takes him to her remote cabin to recover. It turns out that Annie is a huge fan of Sheldon’s work, which consists of a series of romance novels about a character named Misery Chastain. Initially helpul and polite, Annie’s attitude changes when she reads Paul’s next book and discovers that he plans to kill off Misery. She forces Paul to burn his manuscript and rewrite the novel so Misery doesn’t die and the books can live on. As Annie’s behaviour becomes increasingly erratic, Sheldon realises that unless he can get away from her, she will eventually kill him.
